What is endodontics?

Endodontics is the dental branch that involves the care of the endodontum, or the space (present within each individual tooth) in which the dental pulp resides (consisting of cells, blood vessels and nerves). It is necessary to turn to endodontic therapy when a carious or traumatic lesion causes irreversible alteration of the dental pulp, which can lead to necrosis.

When is endodontics needed?

Endodontic therapy is sometimes used, when preparing a tooth for prosthetic purposes, the reduction of dental tissue could lead to pulp necrosis. In this case the necrosis is due to iatrogenic causes.

Benefits of Saving the Natural Tooth

Endodontic treatment helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for ongoing dental work, which means that it helps you save your natural tooth and preserve the natural shape of your face and jaw. This boosts your look in no time. It also prevents further serious infections, problems from shifting teeth. It is also virtually pain free, which means that most of this pain is actually caused by the decaying and infected pulp that root canals aim to clean away. The majority of patients will experience little to no pain after their root canal procedure. Patients who experience root canals are actually six times more likely to describe it as painless than patients who have a tooth extracted. Last but not least, tooth extraction can take longer than root canal treatment due to follow-up appointments required for a denture, bridge or implant; plus the cost may be higher.
